Passover Question
Question:
Thank you for your prompt and informative reply. I have more questions for you: First, pardon my ignorance, what does "kitniyot" mean? I have always read that sesame seeds are not acceptable for Passover, yet year after year they sell those sesame seed candies that are marked kosher for Passover. Are cashews kosher for Pasover? I've read that they, like peanuts, are legumes and would therefore not be acceptable. As long as we're on this subject, what about all the other nuts - hazelnuts, brazil nuts, macademias, sunflower seeds, pumkin seeds? Also, what about string beans? Thank you for your help.
Passover Answer(s)
Answer:
Legumes are considered kitniyot so any type of bean is included. Nuts from trees are acceptable. The cashew is a nut and acceptable for Passover. Whole packaged nuts are acceptable for Passover. If the product is processed, it must have a Kosher for Passover certification mark on its label to assure it is Kosher for Passover. Those sesame seed candies are kitniyot. They mark them as Kosher for Passover but they are kitniyot and not acceptable to Ashkinazi Jews. For more information on kitniyot, please visit the Kitniyot links on our Passover Guides page (http://kosher4passover.com/guides.htm).
